The Russian Academy of Sciences has joined hands with the Koch-Mechnikov Forum, the Robert Koch Institute, and Federal Budget Institution of Science Central Research Institute for Epidemiology of the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor) and organised the Socially Significant Diseases and Antibiotic Resistance International Conference to be held on 30 June 2023 online.

Antibiotic resistance levels are rising to alarmingly high levels worldwide. Today, the World Health Organisation officially calls antibiotic resistance one of the most serious threats to humanity. About 700 thousand people in the world die annually as a direct result of antibiotic resistance. If no substantial measures are taken to remedy the situation, WHO estimates show that this "invisible pandemic" will claim up to 10 million lives by 2050.
